Sunday Slow Down: How I Unwind & Reconnect

Sundays are sacred. They’re my reset button—the day I shake off the week, prep for the next, and carve out little moments that feel like a deep breath. No rushing, no overbooking, just a mix of self-care, creativity, and quality time with my favorite tiny human.

One of the rituals I’ve come to love? Watercolor journaling. Back in 2024, I took an online watercolor class, and ever since, painting has become my go-to way to relax. There’s something so calming about watching the colors swirl together, letting creativity take over without any pressure to be perfect. And now, I’ve taken it a step further by incorporating the Emily Lex Studio Watercolor Workbooks into my Sundays.

A Creative Ritual That Feels Like Magic

The thing about creativity is that sometimes you don’t know where to start. That’s why these workbooks have been such a game-changer. They offer just enough structure to help me stretch my skills but leave plenty of room for play. Whether it’s painting delicate florals, tiny birds, or soft washes of color, it’s the perfect blend of guided practice and free-flowing expression. And let’s be real—sometimes, I just want to paint without having to overthink what to create. These workbooks make it easy.
But my favorite part? Sharing this ritual with Olivia.

Screen-Free Sundays & Bonding Moments

Lately, Olivia and I have made it a tradition to do these watercolor pages together. We set up at the kitchen table, pick our colors, and chat about her week while we paint. It’s screen-free, stress-free, and one of the best ways to reconnect after the whirlwind of school, work, and everything in between.

There’s something about sitting side by side, brush in hand, that makes conversation flow in a way that’s different from the usual day-to-day chatter. We talk about her latest school projects, her big dreams (spoiler: they change weekly), and whatever little things have been on her mind. It reminds me of how important it is to create these small, meaningful moments because they add up to something big.

Environmental & Lifestyle Factors Matter, Too

Your surroundings can influence how often your skin needs exfoliating:

  • Urban environments (hello pollution!) may require more frequent exfoliation to clear buildup.
  • Cold/dry climates can increase skin sensitivity, so you may need to exfoliate less.
  • High humidity can mean more oil and congestion, consider bumping up your exfoliation.
  • Makeup wearers benefit from regular exfoliation to keep their base looking smooth and fresh.

Even seasonal shifts matter, you might exfoliate more in the summer when oil and sweat are high, and dial it back in winter when your skin feels dry and fragile.

Sundays Are for Slowing Down

Beyond painting, my Sunday wind-down routine includes a few other essentials:

  • A long shower with all the luxe body care. Davines LOVE body wash has been a recent obsession, and I follow it up with Alastin Body TransForm to keep my skin feeling soft and smooth.
  • A cozy cup of something warm. Chamomile tea, matcha, or hot cocoa (if Olivia gets her way) always makes the evening feel extra relaxing.
  • A good book. Right now, I’m working my way through When the Apricots Bloom by Gina Wilkinson—equal parts gripping and beautifully written.
  • Setting the vibe. A candle (currently loving the Casa Isla Concrete candle in Lily of the Valley) and soft background music complete the ritual.

The Art of Being Present

If the last few years have taught me anything, it’s that life moves fast. Too fast. And if we don’t carve out intentional moments to slow down, we miss the little things—the quiet joys, the subtle shifts, the everyday magic.
Sunday evenings remind me that rest isn’t just about doing nothing. It’s about filling your time with things that bring you peace, creativity, and connection. It’s about painting outside the lines, sharing laughter over watercolor pages, and making memories that will last long after the paint dries.

So here’s to slow Sundays, small joys, and embracing the art of unwinding.

Clink, clink. Being this young is art. 🎨✨
