People ask me constantly what I actually use on my own skin. Not what I recommend in the treatment room, not what's trending — what I, a licensed esthetician who has spent two decades looking at skin for a living, actually do every day now that I'm past 40.
So here it is. No 12-step routine. No trend-chasing. Just what's actually earned a permanent spot.
1. Gentle cleanse. I wash my face every morning with a gentle cleanser — usually Face Reality's Barrier Cleanser or GlyMed's Mega Cream Cleanser. Both clean without stripping, which matters more than people realize. Over-cleansing in the morning sets up a barrier problem for the rest of the day.
2. Vitamin C + peptide serum. This is the step that changed my routine the most in the last few years — HydroPeptide's Power Serum on damp skin. It combines a vitamin C derivative with multiple peptide complexes, so it's covering two jobs at once: antioxidant protection against environmental damage, and peptide support for firmness and resilience, which matters more once perimenopause starts changing collagen production.
3. Moisturizer suited to what my skin needs that week. Some weeks that's richer, some weeks it's lighter. I stopped assuming my skin wants the same thing every day of the month.
4. SPF — and I mean actually enough of it. Broad spectrum, reapplied if I'm outside for any real stretch of time. This is the step people skip and the step that matters most.
1. Double cleanse if I'm wearing makeup or SPF, single cleanse if not enough. An oil or balm cleanser first to break down makeup and sunscreen, then a gentle second cleanse if needed.
2. Plated Intense Exosomes. This one's newer to my routine and it's earned its place fast. It uses Renewosome™ platelet-derived exosome technology — cellular messengers that support skin repair and renewal — and it's clinically shown to visibly reduce wrinkles, redness, and discoloration within six weeks. I apply it to clean skin before anything else so it can actually do its job.
3. Retinoid, most nights. This is where I've had to relearn everything. In my 30s I used retinol aggressively, every night, no exceptions. Now I listen to my skin: some weeks that's nightly, some weeks it's every other night, and if my barrier feels compromised, it gets a break entirely. A prescription-strength retinoid or a well-formulated over-the-counter retinol, depending on the season and how my skin is behaving.
4. Barrier-repair moisturizer. This is the step I underestimated for years. A good barrier moisturizer with ceramides and lipids isn't optional after 40 it's the thing that lets everything else in your routine actually work without irritation.
5. Facial oil, some nights. Not every night, but when my skin feels particularly tight or reactive, a facial oil on top locks everything in.
If I had to rank where my routine budget goes, it's antioxidants, peptides, and a genuinely good moisturizer — in that order. Everything else is negotiable. This is also where in-office support matters: professional microneedling and physician-guided peel protocols do things an at-home routine alone can't, which is part of why I still see an Esthetician and Aesthetic Nurse myself, even though I am one.
The biggest change in my routine after 40 isn't a product. It's the posture. I used to follow a routine because it was Tuesday. Now I follow my skin — what it's asking for that week, that month, that season — and build the routine around that instead of the other way around.
That shift alone did more for my skin than any single product ever has.
