I Reacted to a Popular Product I Bought Off TikTok Shop. Here's How I Recovered

A few months ago I bought a product off TikTok Shop, the kind of thing that seemed to be in every influencer's routine that week. It looked interesting enough to try. What I didn't expect was how long it would take me, a licensed esthetician, to actually figure out it was the problem. And, even longer to fix it.

How it started

A popular skincare product kept showing up on my FYP and Feed; then a few clients came in chatting about it. I thought what the heck! Let's try it. My skin can usually handle anything I throw at it.

A few weeks in, my skin felt off. Tight, vaguely itchy, a little dry. I chalked it up to weather. Then it got worse, though never into a full rash, just some breakouts around my mouth. I immediately assumed perioral dermatitis. But the telltale rash never actually showed up, so I kept second-guessing myself for over a month.

What finally broke the mystery open was scanning my own face with our Aura Reality 3D scanner. The redness readings were elevated well before anything was visible in the mirror, and when I looked at where the redness was concentrated, it mapped exactly to where I'd been applying that TikTok product. Nowhere else. That's the moment it clicked.

The product itself is probably fine for a lot of people, but as a woman firmly in perimenopause, it was a hard no for my skin. And I wasn't alone. A few clients and an aesthetic nurse I know had run into the same reaction.

I talk about it all here in this TikTok.

What I actually did to recover

Once I knew what was causing it, the recovery protocol was simple, but I want to walk through it because the instinct to "fix" reactive skin with more product is exactly the wrong move.

1. I stopped everything, immediately. Not just the offending product, everything except the essentials. When skin is reactive, more actives is never the answer, even ones that normally work fine for me.

2. I brought in hypochlorous acid. I reached for Face Reality's Omni Clear Mist multiple times a day. It's antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory without any sting, which matters when skin is already compromised and can't tolerate anything that burns or tightens.

3. I leaned on barrier repair, not treatment. A ceramide-rich barrier moisturizer, applied generously, became the only real "step" in my routine for about two weeks. No actives, no exfoliation, nothing asking my skin to do extra work while it was trying to heal.

4. I let Plated Intense Exosomes do the recovery work. This is exactly the situation that product earns its place for. Its Renewosome™ exosome technology supports skin repair, and I wanted something actively helping my barrier rebuild rather than just protecting it.

5. I rescanned instead of guessing. Every few days, another Aura scan told me whether redness was actually trending down or whether I was just telling myself it looked better. That data kept me from either panicking or declaring victory too early.

6. I brought in GlyMed's CBD Hydratherapy Masque with Micro-Silver on the worst weeks.

It combines CBD with medical-grade Micro-Silver and hyaluronic acid, so it's doing two jobs at once: the CBD works to visibly reduce redness and inflammation, while the Micro-Silver supports your skin's natural flora to help control bacteria and encourage healthy cell turnover. It's genuinely one of those products that quietly does a lot, brightening, plumping, hydrating, and calming inflammation all at once, which made it a great fit while my skin needed both soothing and hydration at the same time.

I used it two to three times that week, more than I normally would.

What I'd tell you if this happens to you

Trending products move fast, and the influencer testing them often doesn't have the skin type, hormonal stage, or sensitivity you do. What works beautifully for someone in their 20s can be a genuine problem for skin in perimenopause, when the barrier is already more fragile and reactive to begin with.

If your skin starts feeling off after trying something new, don't wait for a dramatic rash to take it seriously the way I did. Tight, itchy, or subtly irritated is already your skin telling you something. Strip back to basics, support the barrier instead of treating it like it needs fixing, and give it real time before reintroducing anything else.

And if you have access to any kind of skin analysis tool, use it. I run a studio full of technology built to catch exactly this kind of thing, and it still took me over a month to trust what my own face was telling me. Don't make the same mistake I did.
